Blog # 3: Dreamers
I choose a picture book called “Dreamers” by Yuri Morales. This picture book won the Pura Belpré Award. “Dreamers” won the Pura Belpré Award because is a picture book that represents the Latino cultural experience in a work of literature for children. “Dreamers” is a picture book that taught me that we Latinos are immigrants who have our own stories, who are resilience, how are hope, and how are love. In order for Latinos to achieve that we need to adapt to the new culture, rules, values, etc. of the new country we are immigrating. “Dreamers” is a picture book explaining what people feel when they immigrate to a new country. In this book the main character is immigrating to a new country with her baby. In the picture book I was able to see how we immigrants feel when we come to a new country were everything is different. For example, in the picture book the mother is showering her son in a fountain. For her that act did not signify that she was breaking a rule, she noticed she was when she saw the police officer. Another example, is that when we immigrate to a new country we do not know their language.
I believe getting to a country where no one can understand us is one of the hardest part we immigrants have to go through. But thanks to the books we can explain ourselves, dream, write, speak, read, etc. In “Dreamers” the main character is able to fly her imagination and her son’s thanks to the books in the library. Because as the main character says “ where we didn’t need to speak we only needed to trust and we did”. The main character also says “ books became our language, books became our home, books became our lives”. Thanks to books we are able to explain ourselves, learn new things, get inspired, etc.
In conclusion, “Dreamers” is a picture book that taught me that we immigrants are fighters of this world because we are able to adjust our selves to a new culture, a new country, and a new language. That every time we open a book we can dream, we can learn, we can write, we can read, etc. Because thanks to books we can communicate to other people and they can communicate to us.
