Sulwe
I choose the picturebook called “Sulwe” by Lupita Nyong’o and illustrated by Vashti Harrison. This book has win the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor for Vashti Harrison's art, NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Children's Literary Work. I considered “Sulwe” to be a piece of art. I considered Vashti Harrison did an awesome job illustrating this picturebook because all of the drawings perfectly interact with the story. I believe that Vashti Harrison use double-page spread illustration throughout this book in order to catch the readers eye, in order to actually show the protagonist feelings. For example:
In these illustrations Sulwe seems sad and crying while her mother tries to comfort her and make her feal better. After reading the text we can see that the illustrations demonstrate what is the text saying. In this part of the picturebook Sulwe is sad because nobody at her school likes her because she is dark as the color of midnight. Her mother is reminding Sulwe that her beauty comes from her inside, from her heart and not by the way she looks.
Vashti Harrison also use different hues and texture in order to demonstrate and show the feelings of the writer and the protagonist. Vashti Harrison decided to use warm and cold colors in order to represent the moral of “Sulwe” and to make contrast. For example:
In this illustration Vashti Harrison draw all the room with cold colors in order to get the attention of us readers to the warm color of the star. By illustrating the picture this way Vashti Harrison is creating contrast. This contrast allows us readers to appreciate the illustration in a better way and also to allow us to understand that part of the story. We are able to understand the part of the story because the illustration is reflecting what the story is telling. I feel that this type of illustrations is like a mirror that allows us to feel part of the story.
In this illustrations we can see that Vashti Harrison use warm and cold colors in order to give meaning and show use the moral of the picturebook. In this illustration we can see two girls. One girl is composed of warm colors while the other one is composed of cold colors. This two girls are sisters, one represents the day while the other one the night. In her the girls are happy because they noticed that everyone is perfect. That God created us in his own image and likeness.
In conclusion, I choose the picture book called “Sulwe” where the moral is that we are perfect just the way we are, that we do not have to change. In “Sulwe” Vashti Harrison did an awesome job illustrating the story since the illustrations perfectly explain what the text is saying. Vashti Harrison used different types of elements and principles of art while creating this illustrations.
