Cinderella and The lion and the mouse

Folklore is a type of story that is pass from generation to generation. At first it was pass as an oral story but after the invention of the printing press, publishers were able to write them. Those stories made me a lot different or not than the real story because everyone tells the story in their own way. The stories are choose are “Cinderella” retold by Lindsay Mizer and illustrated by Jim Talbot which is a fairy tale and “The lion and the mouse” adapted by Teresa Mlwarer and illustrated by Olga Cuéllar which is a fable.                  I personally like fairy tales because love, friendship, etc. always win and evil or envy always loose. I believe that we can read our students a fairy tale in order for them to learn the message that if they behave in the right way they are going to be compensated in a way. I will also read it since kids or children love them so it will b...

Blog # 4: Characteristics of picture books

The books that I choose are “Last Stop On The Market Street” by Matt Peña and illustrated by Christian Robinson, “Dancing Hands” by Margarita Engle and illustrated by Rafael López, and “La Princesa and the Pea” by Susan Middleton Elya and illustrated by Juana Martinez-Neal. I considered them to be picture books because they include different characteristics of picture books. The characteristics these books have that makes them picture books are: ·         That both words and illustrations contribute to the story’s meaning. Pictures integrate with the text.  ·         The books are 32 pages. ·         Multiple levels of meaning ·         Words are carefully selected to set the mood and create vivid images. ·         Memorable and well develop characters. ·         The w...

Blog # 3: Dreamers

Image
I choose a picture book called “Dreamers” by Yuri Morales. This picture book won the Pura Belpré Award. “Dreamers” won the Pura Belpré Award because is a picture book that represents the Latino c ultural experience in a work of literature for children. “Dreamers” is a picture book that taught me that we Latinos are immigrants who have our own stories, who are resilience, how are hope, and how are love. In order for Latinos to achieve that we need to adapt to the new culture, rules, values, etc. of the new country we are immigrating. “Dreamers” is a picture book explaining what people feel when they immigrate to a new country. In this book the main character is immigrating to a new country with her baby. In the picture book I was able to see how we immigrants feel when we come to a new country were everything is different. For example, in the picture book the mother is showering her son in a fountain. For her that act did not signify that she was breaking a rule, she noticed she w...

Sulwe

Image
I choose the picturebook  called “Sulwe” by Lupita Nyong’o and illustrated by Vashti Harrison. This book has win the Coretta Scott King  Illustrator Honor for Vashti Harrison's art,  NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Children's Literary Work. I considered “Sulwe” to be a piece of art. I considered Vashti Harrison did an awesome job illustrating this picturebook because all of the drawings perfectly interact with the story. I believe that Vashti Harrison use double-page spread illustration throughout this book in order to catch the readers eye, in order to actually show the protagonist feelings. For example: In these illustrations Sulwe seems sad and crying while her mother tries to comfort her and make her feal better. After reading the text we can see that the illustrations demonstrate what is the text saying. In this part of the picturebook Sulwe is sad because nobody at her school likes her because she is dark as the color of midnight. Her mother is remindi...

Memories of reading

Looking back at my memories of when I was an elementary student, I do not quietly remember a lot of books I read. I believe I do not remember does books because they did not teach me anything worthy of remembering. I do remember some of the books that my mom or dad used to read to me when I was a little girl. Those books are “Caperucita roja” which in English is “Little Red Riding Hood”, “Los tres cerdito y el lobo feroz” which in English is “The Three Little Pigs”, and     “La Tortuga y la libre” which in English is “The Tortoise and the Hare”.     From this three books I learned a lot of things I still apply to my life. From “Caperucita roja” I learned that we always have to be cautious with the people that is around us because sometimes those people can heart us. For example, in the book caperucita treats the wolf with kindness and in return the wolf tries to eat her. In the book of “Los tres cerdito y el lobo feroz” taught me the message that we always hav...
